This special event is open to our entire Escuela community (ages 12 and up), and Escuela current and alumni families are welcome to invite family members and friends to join them.

About The Event
Join us for an engaging conversation with accomplished writers, producers, directors, and creatives from the Escuela community as they share lessons from their careers in entertainment and the qualities that have helped them find and sustain success—from confidence, creativity, and communication to self-agency and the power of community.
While their careers have been built in Hollywood, the lessons behind their success extend far beyond entertainment. We’ll explore how these qualities resonate across industries and in our own professional lives, as well as how they connect to the Escuela experience—from an alumna who carried them into her career to parents whose professional journeys shaped what they sought in an education for their children.
Meet the Moderator & Panelists
Kimrie Lewis | Moderator and Escuela Plus Parent
Kimrie Lewis is an actor, writer, and award-winning director hailing from South Los Angeles. An alumna of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Kimrie starred as Mika on NBC’s Kenan, Poppy on ABC’s Single Parents, and spent five seasons as Reporter Ashley on ABC’s Scandal. As a writer, she has written for Hartbeat Studios and IFC and is currently entering her third season on Family Feud. Kimrie wrote and directed the comedy short Fake It Til You Make It, which she developed at the Sundance Episodic Intensive. Most recently, Kimrie, Loretta Devine, and Bashir Salahuddin led the film Three Colors: Pan-African, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2026 American Black Film Festival. Off-screen, Kimrie is an active supporter of The Innocence Project and loves watching her young daughter cheer on the Los Angeles Lakers alongside her husband.
Raamla Mohamed Hunter | Panelist and Escuela de Montessori Alumna
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Raamla Mohamed Hunter is the Creator and Showrunner/Executive Producer of Onyx Collective’s first scripted drama series, Reasonable Doubt, in conjunction with 20th Television. Season four of the hit drama is currently in post-production. Raamla signed her first overall deal with ABC Signature in 2018 and has been in the Disney family since 2009, when she started as a Production Assistant on Grey’s Anatomy before becoming a fellow in the Disney/ABC Writing Program. She was a writer and co-executive producer on the Emmy-nominated Little Fires Everywhere for Hulu. Prior to that, she was a writer and producer on Scandal, where she penned eleven episodes of the series, including the seventh-season crossover episode with How to Get Away with Murder. Raamla graduated from Columbia University with a B.A. in English and Comparative Literature and earned an M.F.A. from the University of Southern California.
Matthew Claybrooks | Panelist and Escuela Plus Parent
Born and raised in Compton, Matt learned about the harsh realities of life at an early age and how to use humor to cope with them. A 2024 Emmy Award winner and PGA nominee for Outstanding Variety Special for Netflix’s Chris Rock: Selective Outrage, for which he served as Executive Producer, Matt is currently the Showrunner and Executive Producer of the BET+ animated series Lil Kev, based on the early life of comedian and actor Kevin Hart. Matt has written on multiple television shows, including The Gordita Chronicles (HBO Max), All About the Washingtons (Netflix), The Game (BET), and Everybody Still Hates Chris (Comedy Central), as well as multiple awards and variety shows, from the Oscars to Saturday Night Live.

Carl Seaton | Panelist and Escuela Plus Parent
Carl Seaton is an award-nominated director and filmmaker whose work spans acclaimed independent film and episodic television. A graduate of Columbia College Chicago, Carl began his career as an independent filmmaker, with his debut feature, One Week, earning Best Film honors at the American Black Film Festival and Urbanworld Film Festival. He made his episodic television directorial debut in 2017 on BET’s Rebel, with the support of the late John Singleton, and has since directed episodes of acclaimed series including Cross, Fight Night, The Terminal List, Reasonable Doubt, Snowfall, Godfather of Harlem, Bel-Air, The Chi, Chicago P.D., and The Equalizer. A multiple NAACP Image Award nominee, Carl remains an eternal student of the craft, bringing the perspective, discipline, and work ethic of an independent filmmaker to every story he tells.
